The engine is fine. The transfer switch is fine. The problem is in the tank.

Degraded diesel fuel is one of the most common and least discussed causes of generator failure during actual outages. And in Houston, where summer heat and year-round humidity accelerate the problem faster than almost anywhere in the country, it’s something every diesel generator owner needs to understand. What Happens to Diesel Fuel Over Time

Diesel fuel doesn’t last forever. Left sitting in a tank for more than 12 months, it begins to break down through a process called oxidation. The long hydrocarbon chains that give diesel its energy content start to polymerize, forming dark, sticky deposits. Microbial growth accelerates in warm, humid conditions. Water intrusion, which is nearly inevitable in Houston’s climate through tank condensation alone, creates the perfect environment for bacteria and fungi to colonize at the fuel-water interface.

The result is a tank full of fuel that looks fine on the surface but contains particulates, microbial sludge, water contamination, and oxidized compounds that will clog fuel filters, injectors, and fuel lines within minutes of a high-demand run.

According to the Diesel Technology Forum, diesel fuel stored for more than six months can begin showing measurable degradation depending on storage conditions. In Houston’s climate, that timeline is shorter. We’ve tested tanks on well-maintained generators that looked spotless from the outside and found fuel that was already past the point of reliable use.

What Fuel Polishing Actually Does

Fuel polishing is not the same as adding a fuel stabilizer additive to your tank. Those products slow degradation but they don’t fix fuel that has already gone bad.

A proper fuel polishing service involves removing the fuel from the tank, passing it through a multi-stage filtration and water separation system, and returning clean, conditioned fuel to the tank. Our process removes:

  • Free and emulsified water , which is the primary driver of microbial growth
  • Particulate contamination down to very fine micron levels
  • Microbial biomass , including bacteria and fungal colonies that have formed at the tank bottom or fuel-water interface
  • Oxidized fuel components and dark, sticky sludge deposits

After polishing, the fuel meets or exceeds the ASTM D975 standard for diesel fuel quality. More importantly, it’s fuel your generator can actually rely on.

We also inspect the tank itself during the service. Microbial growth leaves residue on tank walls and baffles. If we see significant contamination, we’ll let you know what the tank condition looks like and what additional steps, if any, are warranted.

How Often Does Generator Fuel Need to Be Polished

This depends on a few factors: tank size, how frequently the generator runs, your tank’s exposure to temperature swings and moisture, and the starting quality of the fuel you received.

A reasonable general guideline for most commercial standby generators is fuel polishing every 12 to 24 months if the generator runs infrequently. If your unit sees regular exercise load and the fuel turns over more frequently, you may be able to stretch that interval. If your generator has been sitting for two or more years without a fuel service, it’s past due.

For Houston specifically, I’d lean toward the shorter end of that range. The combination of heat-driven oxidation and humidity-driven condensation means fuel degrades faster here than in drier, cooler climates. We always check fuel condition during our maintenance visits, and if we see early signs of degradation, we’ll flag it and discuss options rather than let it go until the next scheduled service.

Signs Your Generator Fuel May Already Be a Problem

Some indicators are visible. Some are only apparent during operation. A few things worth paying attention to:

Dark or hazy fuel appearance. Clean diesel is clear to light amber. Dark, opaque, or visibly cloudy fuel is a sign of oxidation or water contamination.

Fuel filter clogging between service intervals. If your technician is finding dirty filters ahead of schedule, the fuel is likely the culprit.

Generator running rough or losing power under load. Partially clogged injectors and fuel restrictions cause the engine to run lean, which shows up as rough operation, low output, or unexpected shutdowns under demand.

Visible sludge or sediment in fuel samples. When we do oil and fuel inspections during maintenance visits, we look at fuel samples. Visible particulates or dark residue in the sample jar is a clear signal.

None of these symptoms get better on their own. The fuel won’t improve sitting in the tank.
