Standby, not portable

A standby generator is permanently installed outside the house, wired into your electrical system through an automatic transfer switch, and fuelled from your gas line or a propane tank. When the utility drops, it starts and transfers on its own — typically within seconds, with nobody at home needing to do anything.

That is the whole difference from a portable unit. A portable has to be dragged out, fuelled, started and run on extension cords, and it cannot safely power hardwired circuits like your HVAC, well pump or oven. For a storm that lasts a few hours it is workable. For the multi-day outages this part of Texas actually gets, it is not.

Sizing comes first

The most common way a generator install goes wrong is being sized on a guess. Undersize it and the unit runs at its limit, struggles on motor startup and wears out early. Oversize it and you have paid for capacity that never gets used and a unit that runs inefficiently at light load.

We work out your running load, add the largest single startup surge, then allow headroom so continuous draw stays at or below 80% of the generator's rating — the 80% rule. You can get a rough number yourself with the sizing tool, but the binding version needs somebody looking at your actual panel.

The transfer switch matters more than people expect

The automatic transfer switch is what separates your house from the grid when the generator runs. It is a safety device as much as a convenience one — without proper transfer, a running generator can backfeed the utility line and endanger anyone working on it. It also determines what actually gets powered: a whole-home switch covers everything, while an essential-circuits switch covers a defined subset for considerably less money.

Natural gas or propane

Most homes here run on natural gas because the supply is already at the property and never needs refilling. Propane is the answer where there is no gas line, and it stores indefinitely. The trade-off is supply duration: a gas line runs as long as the utility does, a tank runs as long as what is in it.

Either way the fuel line has to be sized for the generator's demand. An undersized gas run is one of the most common reasons a unit that passed inspection still struggles under load, and it is not something you find out about until the first real outage.

Residential and commercial

Air-cooled units from roughly 10 to 26 kW cover most homes. FAQ

Common questions

What is the 80% rule for generator sizing?
A standby generator should not run continuously above about 80% of its rated capacity. Sizing to 100% leaves nothing in reserve for startup surges, degrades the unit faster, and means any load you add later pushes it past its limit. When we size a system we work out your running load, add the largest single startup surge, then allow that 20% headroom on top. It is why a 22 kW unit is not the right answer for a 22 kW load.
Do I need to back up the whole house, or just some circuits?
Either works, and the difference is mostly cost. Backing up essential circuits — fridge, lights, outlets, internet, one HVAC zone — needs a much smaller unit. Whole-home coverage means not thinking about it during an outage. The sizing tool on this page will show you what each approach costs you in kW, which is usually the clearest way to see the trade-off.
How long does a generator installation take?
The installation itself is typically a short job once everything is on site. The longer part is usually sequencing: equipment lead time, the permit, coordinating the gas supply, and scheduling the inspection. We will give you a realistic timeline in writing with your proposal rather than a number over the phone.

In most Fort Bend master-planned communities, yes. Exterior mechanical equipment normally goes through architectural review, and the committee will look at placement, screening, side-yard clearance and whether gas piping is visible from the street. It is worth starting that process early — approval timelines are set by the HOA, not by us. We can provide the equipment details and placement drawings the submission usually needs.
