The Question Every Generator Owner Eventually Asks
Somebody called us last spring with a Generac unit that had been sitting beside their house in Missouri City for almost 14 years. It had never been professionally serviced. The original owner bought the house, ran a few self-tests, and figured the thing was fine. The new owner inherited it and assumed the same.
Then Hurricane Beryl knocked out power across Fort Bend County, and the generator ran for about six hours before it started surging and eventually shut down.
We see this story play out more than I’d like to admit.
So when people ask us “how long does a standby generator last,” the honest answer is: it depends almost entirely on how it’s been treated. The mechanical potential is there for a very long run. But maintenance neglect compresses that timeline fast, and Houston’s climate makes that compression even faster.
The Baseline Numbers From the Manufacturers
Generac and Kohler, the two brands we’re certified to install and service, both publish expected lifespan guidelines for their standby units. Air-cooled standby generators in the 10kW to 26kW range that most homeowners use are generally rated for 1,500 to 3,000 hours of total run time, or roughly 20 to 30 years of service life when operated under normal standby conditions.
Liquid-cooled generators , which are larger commercial-grade units starting around 30kW and going up from there, are built to a higher duty cycle. Properly maintained, a liquid-cooled Kohler or Generac unit can run well past 30 years.
Those numbers assume proper, regular maintenance. That’s not a footnote. That’s the whole story.
For context, Generac’s official documentation outlines service intervals and expected component life for their residential lines. Kohler’s engineering specs tell a similar story. Both companies build quality equipment. Neither one builds equipment that maintains itself.
What Actually Shortens a Generator’s Life
Let me walk through what we see in the field, because this is where theory meets reality.
Oil and filter neglect is the biggest killer. A standby generator runs its self-test cycle every week, typically for 12 minutes. That’s not a lot of hours, but the oil still degrades from heat cycling, moisture, and combustion byproducts. Briggs & Stratton’s engine maintenance research and the engine manufacturers supplying Generac and Kohler both recommend annual oil changes at minimum, and more frequently for generators with higher run hours. Skipping this concentrates acidic contaminants in the oil and accelerates wear on bearings, rings, and cylinder walls.
Running without load. A generator that only runs its 12-minute self-test cycle and never carries a real load during an actual outage can develop a condition called wet stacking. Incomplete combustion leaves carbon deposits and unburned fuel in the exhaust system. We recommend periodic load testing, especially for units that don’t see much use.
Houston humidity. This one is specific to our market. The Gulf Coast climate is genuinely harsh on electronics, enclosures, and fuel systems. Moisture intrusion into the control board causes corrosion. Fuel sitting in carbureted units (less common on modern standby generators but relevant for older units) can gum up the system. Battery terminals corrode faster here than they would in a drier climate. We’ve pulled units in Pearland that looked fine on the outside and had circuit boards that were visibly corroded inside.
Ignoring the battery. The starting battery in a standby generator typically lasts three to five years. If the battery fails, the generator can’t start automatically. This is one of the most common reasons we get emergency calls right before or during a storm.
Deferred repairs. A small fuel leak, a failing capacitor, a loose connection: none of these is catastrophic on day one. But left unaddressed, minor issues escalate. We’ve seen a $200 repair become a $1,200 repair over the course of two years of neglect.
What Extends a Generator’s Life
This part is simpler than people expect.
Annual professional maintenance is the single highest-leverage thing you can do. We’re talking oil and filter change, spark plug inspection, air filter service, battery load test, fuel system inspection, transfer switch exercise, and a full operational test. Done every year, this maintenance catches problems while they’re small and keeps the engine running in spec.
Beyond the annual service, there are a few habits that make a real difference:
- Keep the area around the generator clear. Debris, overgrown shrubs, and vines restrict airflow and accelerate corrosion.
- Don’t skip the self-test cycle. Some homeowners disable the weekly test because it’s loud or they don’t want to burn fuel. That test keeps the engine lubricated, the battery charged, and the system exercised. Let it run.
- Address alerts promptly. Most modern Generac and Kohler units have remote monitoring capabilities. If your unit throws a fault code, don’t wait.

When Age Stops Being the Issue
Here’s something worth knowing: a well-maintained 15-year-old generator will often outperform a poorly maintained 8-year-old one. Age is a factor, but condition is the dominant variable.
That said, parts availability does become a consideration eventually. Older units may require components that are no longer in production. Control boards for certain legacy Generac models, for example, can have long lead times or be genuinely unavailable. If we’re doing major repairs on a unit and we start running into parts sourcing problems, that’s usually the conversation where we talk honestly about whether continued investment makes sense versus replacement.
The crossover point, where repair costs start outpacing the value of the existing unit, typically lands somewhere around the time a generator needs an engine overhaul or a major electrical component replacement on a unit that’s 15-plus years old. But that’s a case-by-case conversation, not a blanket rule.
A standby generator that’s properly installed and consistently maintained should give you 20 or more years of reliable service. Most of the generators we see fail prematurely weren’t mechanically defective. They were simply neglected.
