What we see most
Standby generators fail in a fairly predictable set of ways, and knowing which one you have helps us arrive with the right parts:
- Will not start
- No crank, or cranks and does not fire. Battery, fuel supply, control board or starter.
- Starts, then shuts down
- Often overheating, low oil pressure, or a load the unit cannot carry.
- Runs but will not transfer
- The generator is fine; the automatic transfer switch is not. Common and frequently missed.
- Fault code on the controller
- The unit is telling you what is wrong. Give us the code and we can usually narrow it before arriving.
- Exercises weekly but failed in an outage
- A weekly exercise cycle proves the engine runs. It does not prove the system transfers under real load.
- Alarm, or nothing at all
- Dead controller, tripped breaker, or a battery that quietly died months ago — the single most common cause.
Check the battery first. It costs you nothing and it is the most common single cause of a standby generator not starting. Batteries degrade on a shelf whether the engine runs or not, and a weekly exercise cycle can mask a weak one right up until it has to carry a real start.

Warranty work
We are a Generac Authorized Dealer and Kohler Certified, so warranty repairs on those brands go through us directly rather than you chasing the manufacturer. Worth knowing: warranty approval is the manufacturer's decision, not ours, and documented service history is usually what determines the answer. A unit with no maintenance record is the hardest kind of claim to get approved.

Repair or replace
At some point a repair stops making sense. Broadly: if the unit is out of warranty, the fault is in the engine or alternator rather than a bolt-on component, and the repair approaches a meaningful fraction of a new installation, replacement is usually the better spend — you reset the warranty and get current emissions and control hardware.
We will tell you which side of that line you are on before doing the work rather than after. If replacement is the answer, see installation.
Stop it happening again
Most of the failures above are maintenance failures with a delay on them. Once the unit is running again, a GenWatch plan puts it on a schedule — and the transfer test at each visit is the only thing that actually proves the system will work when the grid drops.
