What does a generator actually cost?

Why the price you saw online is not the price

When a manufacturer site or a big-box retailer shows a generator price, that figure is for the machine sitting on a pallet. It does not include the transfer switch, the concrete, the gas line, the electrical work, the permit, the labor or the commissioning — and those together are frequently more than the generator.

That is not a trick, it is just how equipment is listed. But it means comparing an advertised price to an installed quote is comparing two different things, and it is the single most common reason people feel blindsided.

What actually drives the number

The generator itself

Size in kW, brand, and air-cooled versus liquid-cooled. This is the only part most advertised prices cover.

Automatic transfer switch

Whole-home or essential-circuits. A whole-home switch costs more and covers everything; essential-circuits covers a defined subset for less.

Electrical work

Running from the unit to your panel, and the panel work itself. Distance matters — a generator 60 feet from the service is a different job to one 10 feet away.

Gas or propane supply

The line has to be sized for the unit’s demand, not just connected. On propane, tank size and placement come into it.

The pad

Most units sit on a poured concrete pad or a composite base. Ground conditions and access change what that costs.

Permits and inspection

Fees vary by jurisdiction. We pull the permit and meet the inspector; the fee itself is what it is.

Site conditions

Trenching, fence access, drainage, elevation near a floodplain, and how far equipment has to be carried.

Commissioning

Startup, load testing the transfer, and walking you through the controls. Not optional, and sometimes quietly omitted from a cheap quote.

The biggest lever is size

Sizing moves the price more than anything else on that list, and it is the one thing you can investigate yourself before anyone visits. Backing up essential circuits — fridge, lights, outlets, internet, one HVAC zone — needs a much smaller unit than whole-home coverage.

How to compare two quotes properly

If you are holding two numbers that are far apart, the difference is almost never the generator. Check each quote for these, because this is where a cheap number usually comes from:

• Is the transfer switch whole-home or essential-circuits? They are not comparable.
• Is the permit fee included, or billed to you later?
• Who is pulling the permit and meeting the inspector — them, or you?
• Is the gas line sized for the unit, or just connected to what is there?
• Is commissioning and a live transfer test included?
• Is the pad included, and what is it made of?
• Is the crew employed by the contractor, or subcontracted?
