What Being Kohler Certified Actually Means

Critical Power SolutionsKohler

This post used to claim we install Kohler generators “from Houston to Dallas, Austin, San Antonio and every city in between.” We don’t. We work in Greater Houston and the surrounding area, roughly an hour from our Richmond shop, and we’d rather tell you that than take a call we can’t serve. Here’s the honest version.

What “Kohler Certified” actually means

Manufacturer certification gets thrown around loosely, so it’s worth being specific about what it does and doesn’t get you.

Certification means our technicians have completed Kohler’s training program on their equipment, and that we’re authorized to perform warranty work on Kohler standby generators. That second part is the one that matters financially. If your unit fails inside its warranty period, an authorized dealer handles the claim directly with Kohler. Without one, you’re either paying out of pocket or chasing the manufacturer yourself.

It does not mean Kohler sets our prices, guarantees our work, or supervises our installations. Those are ours. And it doesn’t mean a Kohler unit is automatically the right answer for your house — we’re also a Generac Authorized Dealer, which is deliberate. Carrying both means we have no reason to steer you toward one.

Where Kohler tends to be the better choice

Having installed both across Fort Bend and Harris County, the honest summary is that for most homes either brand will serve you well. The decision usually comes down to what’s available in the size you need, lead time, and price on the day.

That said, there are patterns:

  • Build quality and finish. Kohler’s enclosures and alternators have a good reputation, and it shows in how units age outdoors in Gulf Coast humidity.
  • Noise. Several Kohler models run quieter than comparable units in their class. If the generator is going near a bedroom window or a neighbour’s fence line, that’s worth weighing.
  • Warranty terms. Kohler’s residential warranty terms are competitive, and they periodically run extended-warranty promotions worth asking about.

Where Generac tends to win is range — there are simply more sizes and configurations, so sizing rarely forces a compromise — and parts availability, which is the best of the three brands we carry.

What a Kohler install actually involves

The brand on the enclosure changes less about the job than people expect. The work is:

  1. Load assessment. We calculate what you actually need running, add the largest startup surge, and allow headroom so continuous draw stays at or below 80% of rated capacity. You can get a rough figure yourself with our sizing calculator, but the binding number needs someone looking at your panel.
  2. Siting. Setbacks from windows, doors and property lines constrain where a unit can legally sit. In Fort Bend’s master-planned communities, HOA architectural review often constrains it further.
  3. Permit. Pulled with whichever authority has jurisdiction over your address — which, for a lot of Richmond and Fulshear addresses, is the county rather than the city.
  4. Gas and electrical. The gas line has to be sized for the unit’s demand. An undersized run is the most common reason a generator that passed inspection still struggles under load.
  5. Transfer switch. Whole-home or essential-circuits, wired at the panel.
  6. Commissioning. Start it, test the transfer under real load, walk you through the controls.

Servicing a Kohler you didn’t buy from us

You don’t need to have bought from us. We service and repair Kohler units regardless of who installed them, including warranty work. If your original installer has gone quiet or gone out of business, that’s a common enough reason people call.

Kohler air-cooled units are covered by our GenWatch service plans from $35/month, and liquid-cooled units up to 60 kW are covered too.

Where we actually work

Greater Houston and the surrounding area — Richmond, Rosenberg, Sugar Land, Katy, Fulshear, Missouri City, Cinco Ranch, Stafford and the Fort Bend communities around them, plus Harris County broadly. If you’re outside that and looking for a Kohler dealer, Kohler’s own dealer locator will find you someone local, and that’s a better outcome than us driving three hours.

If you’re inside it, get a free quote and we’ll size it properly on site.
