In practice, both brands produce reliable units when properly installed and maintained. We’ve seen Generac units run for days straight after a major storm without skipping a beat. We’ve seen Kohler units sitting on pads for twelve years with nothing more than routine oil changes. The brand matters less than the installation quality and the maintenance history.
Quiet operation. Kohler standby generators run noticeably quieter than comparable Generac units. If your generator pad is close to a neighbor’s property line, close to a bedroom window, or in a neighborhood with strict noise ordinances, Kohler’s lower decibel rating is worth real consideration.
Kohler also has a strong reputation for alternator quality. Product range is also broader. Generac makes everything from 7kW portable units up to massive whole-home and commercial systems, with more granular sizing options in the residential standby category. If you want a 24kW unit, Generac has it. Kohler’s residential lineup has fewer SKUs, though the ones they make are excellent.
And the Generac mobile monitoring is genuinely ahead of Kohler’s at this point. The ability to check your system status, receive outage alerts, and confirm automatic start from your phone is something our customers consistently mention as a feature they love.
The Question Nobody Asks But Should
Who is going to service it?
This is the question that matters more than any spec sheet comparison. A Kohler unit installed by someone who isn’t Kohler Certified is a liability. A Generac unit serviced by a shop that isn’t Generac Authorized is running warranty risks that can cost thousands.
