Why a Standby Generator Maintenance Plan Is Worth Every Penny

Critical Power Solutionsmaintenance

Let me tell you about a call we got last September. A homeowner in Sugar Land had a Generac 22kW that hadn’t been touched by a technician in four years. Not a service call, not an oil change, nothing. The unit was running on original factory fill oil that had long since broken down. When Tropical Storm Harold pushed through and the power went out for two and a half days, his generator ran for about six hours before a low-oil shutdown kicked it off permanently. Seized engine. Total loss.

The replacement cost him nearly $8,000 installed. A maintenance plan would have cost him less than $300 a year.

That’s not an extreme case. It’s a common one. And it’s exactly why we push so hard on generator maintenance plans for every standby unit we install or service in the Houston area.

What Actually Happens During a Generator Maintenance Visit

I think a lot of homeowners picture a maintenance visit as someone glancing at the machine for ten minutes and writing an invoice. That’s not what we do.

A proper standby generator maintenance plan Houston service covers a long checklist of mechanical and electrical items. Here’s what a full annual service with us includes:

Oil and filter change. Generator engines accumulate hours differently than car engines, but oil still degrades. We drain the old oil, replace the filter, and refill to spec. We also inspect what comes out. Dark, gritty oil tells a story.

Air filter inspection and replacement. Houston air is hard on filters. Dust, humidity, pollen. A clogged air filter forces the engine to work harder and can cause it to run rich, which accelerates carbon buildup.

Spark plug inspection. Worn plugs cause hard starts and misfires. On a unit that only runs during outages and weekly self-tests, plug wear isn’t dramatic, but it adds up over years.

Battery load test. The battery is the most common single point of failure on a standby generator. Load testing tells us whether it can actually deliver the current needed to start the engine under real conditions, not just whether it holds a surface charge.

Coolant check. This applies to liquid-cooled units. We check the level, inspect hoses and belts, and look for any signs of weeping or corrosion around fittings.

Transfer switch inspection. The automatic transfer switch has to work flawlessly when the power goes out. We test its operation, check the connections, and look for signs of arcing or overheating.

Full load test. We run the generator under load before we leave. Not just a two-minute idle. A proper run under actual electrical load to confirm everything is operating within spec.

According to Generac’s own maintenance guidelines , air-cooled units should receive service every year or every 200 hours of run time. Liquid-cooled commercial units often require more frequent attention. Skipping these intervals doesn’t just void the warranty in many cases. It sets the stage for the kind of failure that turns a manageable outage into a very expensive problem.

Monthly Plans vs. Annual Plans: What’s the Difference

We offer both structures because different customers have different needs.

An annual maintenance plan covers the once-a-year comprehensive service described above. It’s the right fit for most residential customers who have a well-functioning unit that runs clean and accumulates minimal hours between storms. You get one scheduled visit, priority service status, and discounted labor rates if anything comes up in between.

A monthly plan adds remote monitoring and more frequent check-ins. For customers who want to know their generator passed its weekly self-test, get alerts when something’s off, or simply want a higher level of ongoing attention, this is the tier that makes sense. It’s also what we typically recommend for commercial properties, rental units, or any home where the generator is considered truly critical.

Both plans include priority scheduling during storm season. That matters in Houston, where August and September can see every generator service company in the region completely booked out.

The Competitor Contract Situation

We get calls regularly from homeowners whose service contracts lapsed with another provider. Maybe the company stopped servicing their area. Maybe the technician who used to come out retired. Whatever the reason, their generator has been sitting without a service contract for anywhere from one to three years.

We welcome those customers. But we also want to be honest with them upfront. When a generator hasn’t been serviced in that long, the first visit isn’t a standard maintenance call. It’s a catch-up inspection that may uncover deferred items. That’s not us finding reasons to charge more. That’s the reality of what happens to a machine that runs on combustion and electricity and sits in Houston’s climate without attention.

If you’re in this situation, contact us and tell us when your unit was last serviced. We’ll give you a straight answer on what to expect.

What It Actually Costs to Skip Service

This is where I want to put some real numbers on the table.

A typical annual maintenance plan for a residential standby generator in Houston runs $250 to $400 depending on the unit size and what’s included. An oil change and basic inspection without a plan is usually in the $150 to $200 range per visit.

A new battery runs $80 to $150 in parts alone. A seized engine on a mid-size air-cooled unit can cost $1,500 to $3,500 to rebuild or replace the short block. A full generator replacement, as our Sugar Land customer found out, can easily run $6,000 to $10,000 installed.

The Consumer Reports data on home generator reliability consistently points to maintenance history as the single biggest predictor of long-term reliability. Maintained units last. Neglected ones fail. There’s really no mystery to it.

If you have a standby generator at your home or business in the Greater Houston area and you don’t currently have a service plan in place, now is the right time to fix that. Not in October. Now, before the peak of storm season.

We service Generac and Kohler generators throughout Sugar Land, Richmond, Cypress, Tomball, Spring, Missouri City, Pasadena, League City, and all surrounding communities. Getting set up on a maintenance plan with Critical Power Solutions takes one call and one service visit to get your unit current.
