Sizing Commercial Systems Is a Real Engineering Process
Residential sizing is relatively straightforward. Commercial sizing requires genuine load analysis.
We start by pulling your peak demand data from your utility bills, then we walk the facility and catalog every piece of equipment that needs to run during an outage. HVAC, lighting, point-of-sale systems, walk-in refrigeration, security systems, elevators in multi-story buildings, server rooms. Everything.
The calculation also accounts for motor starting loads, which are the short-duration high-draw spikes that happen when compressors and motors kick on. These spikes can be two to three times the running load of the equipment, and a generator that’s sized only for running load will trip under the starting surge.
For most small to mid-size commercial facilities in Fort Bend County, we’re typically working in the 60kW to 200kW range. Larger facilities, data-heavy operations, or buildings with significant HVAC loads can push well beyond that. The design has to be custom. There’s no shortcut.
Code Compliance Is Not Optional
Commercial generator installations are subject to the National Electrical Code, local Fort Bend County permitting requirements, and often additional standards depending on the building’s use. Healthcare facilities follow NFPA 110 guidelines for emergency power systems. Restaurants and food service operations have refrigeration continuity requirements that feed into the system design.

Natural gas is our default recommendation for businesses in Sugar Land, Richmond, and Katy because it eliminates the need to manage fuel inventory and the supply doesn’t run out during an extended outage.
For facilities in less densely served areas, or for operations that want a secondary fuel option, we also install propane and diesel systems. Diesel is common for large industrial loads and offers very high energy density, though it requires on-site fuel storage and management. Runtime planning is part of every commercial design we do. How long does your business need to run on backup power before the grid is likely to be restored? For most outage events in our area, 24 to 72 hours covers the large majority of situations. If you’re a critical facility like a healthcare provider or an emergency services supplier, you may need to plan for longer.
What the Installation Process Looks Like
Commercial installs move through four phases: site assessment and load analysis, system design with custom drawings, permitted installation, and commissioning with load testing.
The timeline varies. A straightforward 100kW natural gas installation for a single-story office building might take three to five days of field work after permits are issued. A larger or more complex facility takes longer. We don’t rush commissioning. Load testing under real conditions is how we know the system works, not just how we hope it works.
